Legends & Lores Roadside Marker from William G Pomeroy Foundation telling the legend of how Great Bear Springs got its name.

The Friends of Great Bear and the Town of Volney History Center will be dedicating a Legends & Lores Roadside Marker telling the legend of how the Great Bear Springs got its name. The dedication will be held near the entrance to the Great Bear Recreational Area located at the corner of Rt 57 and Great Bear Rd. in the Town of Volney on Thursday August 12th at 5:00 PM.

The Roadside Marker reads:

GREAT BEAR

LOCAL LORE SAYS A YOUNG

NATIVE, AMERICAN MAN WAS

ATTACKED HERE BY A LARGE BEAR

UPON VANQUISHING THE BEAR HE

NAMED THE SPRING GREAT BEAR.

NEW YORK FOLKLORE

WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2021

The Roadside Marker was purchased with funds from a grant by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
